She's reported on sports for some of one of the largest media outlets across the globe. She spent almost a decade covering the sport for The Washington Post, including football, tennis, and basketball. Nichols began a nine year stint at ESPN in which she won two Emmy Awards, and featured in a variety of ESPN's most popular shows like NFL Countdown and SportsCenter. Also, she was an anchor for Monday Night Football on the network. Her next move was CNN followed by Turner Sports. The first show she created and hosted was self-titled, Unguarded with Rachel Nichols, and aired regularly on CNN and CNN International. The show drew more than one-billion viewers in all over the world. During this time Nichols reported on TNT's NBA broadcasts, including the regular season, playoffs, as well as All-Star teams. Alongside covering for TBS as well, she was also a reporter for golf and baseball broadcasts as well as Final Four on CBS. It is the only nomination in the 42 years that have preceded the award for a female from the more than 200 nominees candidates.
